HSBC RedCoin Launches for Retail Payments in Hong Kong PayMe App
Key points
HSBC issues its first HKD stablecoin RedCoin on 23 October 2026, enabling instant P2P and merchant payments inside the PayMe by HSBC app for over 3.3 million users.
HSBC launched its HKD-denominated stablecoin RedCoin (RCHKD) on 23 October 2026 inside the PayMe by HSBC mobile application in Hong Kong. The token, issued by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited under HKMA licence FRS02, allows users to send and receive funds at a 1:1 peg to the Hong Kong dollar without opening a separate account.
Initial circulation reached HKD 80.58 million on launch day, backed by HKD 81.58 million in segregated cash reserves. Daily reserve figures are published on the bank’s stablecoin website, meeting the transparency requirements of Hong Kong’s Stablecoins Ordinance.
PayMe Integration and Immediate Use Cases
RedCoin appears as an in-app wallet option for PayMe’s existing 3.3 million users. No minimum balance applies, and activation uses the same interface already familiar for fiat transfers. Customers can send funds to other PayMe users or pay more than 100,000 participating merchants instantly.
The rollout follows a staff pilot involving roughly 100 employees that tested the complete transaction flow. HSBC has warned users that only the official PayMe and forthcoming HSBC HK App channels are authorised; third-party versions are fraudulent.
Merchant incentives including discounts and RewardCash points accompany the launch. Full activation across the PayMe user base is scheduled to complete in the coming days, after which the bank will add the wallet to the main HSBC HK Mobile Banking App later in 2026.
Regulatory Backing and Reserve Management
HSBC received its stablecoin issuer licence in April 2026 alongside Anchorpoint Financial, becoming one of the first two firms authorised under the new ordinance. The bank also holds an SVF licence (SVFB002) that covers stored-value facilities.

Reserves consist entirely of high-quality liquid cash held in segregated accounts. Independent attestations are planned after the end of the fourth quarter of 2026. The structure aligns with earlier HKMA initiatives such as the e-HKD+ Pilot and Project Ensemble, in which HSBC has participated since 2022.
HSBC Hong Kong CEO Maggie Ng stated the product supports real-economy payments on programmable networks. Digital Assets managing director John O’Neill indicated further wholesale and institutional features will follow the retail phase.
Next Steps for Tokenised Products
Users will soon be able to subscribe to tokenised investment products, including a new share class of an HSBC HKD money market fund, directly from the stablecoin wallet. The bank has also signalled plans to expand RedCoin into institutional settlement and cross-border use cases.
PayMe head Lawrence Li emphasised that the first phase prioritises reliability and customer trust before additional functionality is added. All future features remain subject to the same regulatory oversight applied to the initial retail rollout.
