Standard Chartered announced on 2 November 2026 the launch of its Tokenised Deposits solution in Hong Kong. The service marks the first deployment of the product across the bank’s global network and targets corporate clients including treasurers, banks, investment platforms and digital asset businesses. It integrates with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Ensemble TX infrastructure under Project Ensemble to support programmable use of regulated commercial bank deposits.

Standard Chartered Tokenized Deposits Features and Technical Setup

The solution runs on Standard Chartered’s proprietary blockchain infrastructure. It allows eligible clients to move tokenised deposits in real time across participating banks, with interbank settlement completed in central bank money or wholesale central bank digital currency on a 24/7 basis. This capability supports intragroup liquidity management, treasury operations and investment workflows without relying on traditional business-hour settlement windows.

Standard Chartered developed the product with assistance from the HKMA’s Supervisory Incubator for Distributed Ledger Technology. Technology partners include Fireblocks for embedding banking capabilities and HashKey as ecosystem partner. The bank has participated in Project Ensemble since its early stages, including prior real-value use cases conducted under the sandbox that began in 2024.

Live transactions have already taken place on the platform. China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade have executed tokenised deposit transactions and settlements of tokenised money market funds through Ensemble TX. No transaction volumes or client counts have been disclosed by the bank or the HKMA.

HKMA Ensemble TX Pilot Expansion and Settlement Infrastructure

The launch coincides with the HKMA’s 2 November 2026 update that advances Ensemble TX to support 24/7 interbank settlement of tokenised deposit transactions. Participation in the pilot has grown to 12 banks, including Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited, plus 20 other industry participants. This represents an increase from the initial November 2025 pilot launch that relied on RTGS-based settlement.

Project Ensemble moved from sandbox testing in 2024 to the real-value Ensemble TX pilot in November 2025. The current phase enables settlement in tokenised central bank money, replacing earlier settlement methods. The infrastructure now permits continuous operation, removing time-zone and calendar constraints that previously limited interbank transfers of tokenised assets.

Standard Chartered has stated it will expand the Tokenised Deposits solution to additional markets, although no timeline or specific jurisdictions have been provided. The Hong Kong deployment serves as the initial reference implementation for the bank’s broader rollout plans.

Market Context for Tokenized Bank Deposits in Hong Kong

The introduction of tokenized bank deposits occurs alongside ongoing development of wholesale CBDC capabilities under the HKMA framework. Corporate treasurers gain the ability to program deposit movements and integrate them directly into digital asset platforms while remaining within the regulated banking system. Settlement finality in central bank money reduces counterparty risk compared with arrangements that rely on commercial bank money.

Existing participants in Ensemble TX have already demonstrated cross-entity transfers of tokenised money market funds. These transactions illustrate how tokenised deposits can serve as a bridge between traditional banking rails and on-chain treasury operations. The HKMA has not released aggregate settlement statistics for the pilot to date.

does anyone know if this means my regular current account will soon be tokenized or is it still just for institutional clients?
