HSBC RedCoin Stablecoin Launches on PayMe for 3.3 Million Users
Key points
HSBC introduced its HKD stablecoin RedCoin on PayMe on 23 October 2026, giving 3.3 million users access to P2P transfers and merchant payments backed by segregated reserves.
HSBC launched its HKD stablecoin RedCoin on the PayMe by HSBC app on 23 October 2026. The coin, ticker RCHKD, targets the platform’s 3.3 million users for immediate peer-to-peer transfers and payments at more than 100,000 merchants in Hong Kong.
HSBC RedCoin Stablecoin Availability and Use Cases
Users can activate the in-app stablecoin wallet without opening a new account or maintaining a minimum balance. The rollout occurs in phases over the coming days after the 23 October launch date. At launch, RedCoin supports instant transfers between PayMe users and direct payments to merchants that already accept the app.
RedCoin operates exclusively within permitted HSBC channels. Private keys remain under HSBC control, and the coin uses the bank’s permissioned distributed ledger technology. PayMe wallets and any future HSBC HK App wallets function separately with no interoperability between them. Daily reserve updates appear on the HSBC stablecoins website, showing approximately HKD 81 million in circulation and HKD 82 million in cash reserves as of 26 October 2026.
Transaction incentives include exclusive discounts and RewardCash offers for early users. The stablecoin carries no coverage under Hong Kong’s Deposit Protection Scheme because it is not classified as a bank deposit.
Regulatory Status and Technical Framework
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation received HKMA stablecoin issuer licence FRS02 in April 2026. RedCoin meets the requirements of the Stablecoins Ordinance, including financial crime controls and 1:1 backing by segregated high-quality liquid assets held in cash. HSBC Digital Assets Custody manages safekeeping of the underlying reserves.

HSBC has participated in HKMA pilot programmes, including the e-HKD+ Pilot and Project Ensemble, since 2022. The name RedCoin was selected on 30 September 2026 after a customer survey showed 74 percent recognition of at least one intended use case. Anchorpoint’s HKDAP remains the only other licensed HKD stablecoin issuer in Hong Kong at present.
Reserve assets receive daily valuation updates on the official HSBC site. The first independent auditor attestation is scheduled after the fourth quarter of 2026. All transfers stay restricted to the PayMe environment at this stage.
Planned Additions to RedCoin Functionality
HSBC intends to add RedCoin wallet support to the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App later in 2026. The bank also plans to allow subscriptions to tokenized investment products using RedCoin, beginning with a share class of its own HKD money market fund at a minimum of roughly HK$100. Tokenized gold and third-party funds are listed for subsequent phases.
Further development targets wholesale, corporate and institutional use cases beyond the current retail focus. These steps build directly on the existing PayMe infrastructure and the bank’s prior work with tokenized assets under HKMA supervision.
